🌟 Rewriting Success on Your Own Terms 🌟

Because the Old Definition Doesn’t Fit Anymore

By Messy Bun Therapy

Success used to have a clear checklist:

  • The degree.
  • The job title.
  • The relationship.
  • The house.
  • The balance in your bank account.

If you hit the milestones, you were “doing it right.”
But here’s the thing no one talks about:
You can have all those things and still feel empty. Or invisible. Or like you're living someone else’s life.

If that’s you, let’s just say it plainly:
You’re not broken — the definition of success you were handed just doesn’t fit anymore.

And you’re allowed to rewrite it.

The Problem With the Old Success Formula

Most of us were raised to believe that success looks like hustle, perfection, and proving ourselves over and over again.

But what if:

  • The corporate ladder doesn’t lead where you want to go?
  • Being a full-time mom isn’t fulfilling in the way you were promised?
  • You left a career to take care of your mental health — and now feel like you’re “falling behind”?

We measure success by what others can see.
But the invisible wins — healing, resting, growing, setting boundaries — those deserve to count, too.

💡 Signs You’re Ready to Redefine Success 💡

  • You’re exhausted from chasing goals that don’t bring joy
  • You’ve outgrown the version of you who set those goals
  • You feel guilt for wanting something different than what you "should"
  • You find yourself asking, “Is this all there is?”

If you’ve been quietly craving something more real, more aligned, more you — you’re not alone.
You're in the middle of a values shift, not a failure.

✨ 5 Journal Prompts to Help You Redefine Success ✨

  1. What parts of my current life make me feel truly alive?
  2. What values matter more to me now than they did five years ago?
  3. When do I feel the most like myself?
  4. What “shoulds” am I ready to let go of?
  5. What would success look like if no one else were watching?

🌿 What Success Could Look Like Now 🌿

Let’s stretch the definition.
Success might be:

  • Saying “no” without over-explaining
  • Waking up without dread
  • Resting without guilt
  • Taking meds, setting boundaries, or starting therapy
  • Creating a life that honors your nervous system and your dreams
  • Choosing peace over performance

You don’t need a LinkedIn post to prove you’re thriving.
You just need a life that feels like it fits you.

Try This: Create a “Success Snapshot” for This Season

Instead of a 5-year plan, write a "This Season’s Success Snapshot."

Start with:

“In this season, success looks like…”

And then fill it in.
Examples:

  • …taking care of my mental health
  • …being present with my kids for one full hour a day
  • …finally asking for the help I need
  • …building something slowly instead of rushing to prove

Put it somewhere you can see. Let it remind you that you get to decide what matters now.
