"What Can I Even Talk About in Therapy?"

“So... what do I even say when I get there?”

If you've ever booked a therapy session and then felt a wave of panic thinking, "What am I supposed to talk about?" — you're not alone.

Therapy doesn’t come with a script. And at Messy Bun Therapy, we don’t expect you to show up with one.

Whether you're brand new to therapy or returning after a break, it can feel awkward not knowing where to start. But here’s the truth: you can talk about anything. Seriously. No topic is off limits. If it helps remember confidentiality, nothing you say leaves our time together.

💬 You can talk about:

  • The thing that made you cry in the car yesterday
  • Why you feel so exhausted, even when nothing seems “wrong”
  • How your friendships have felt off lately
  • Feeling angry when you think you’re “supposed to” feel grateful
  • Your relationship with your body, especially if it’s changed
  • The mental load that no one else seems to notice
  • Sex, intimacy, or the total lack of it
  • The identity shift you didn’t expect to hit so hard
  • Fears around motherhood, not becoming a mother, or being somewhere in between
  • Badass Successes you’ve had. Get a promotion at work?  Set a boundary with a parent? Left an unhealthy relationship?  It ALL deserves to be celebrated!
  • Finding Joy in Small Moments

  • Exploration — You don’t have to have the “right” words. Let's walk through the mess.
  • Validation — What you're feeling is real, even if you can’t explain it yet.
  • Growth — Therapy helps untangle the thoughts that keep you stuck.
  • Rest — Sometimes, it’s the only hour of the week that’s truly yours.

🙋‍♀️ Still Not Sure Where to Start?

Try beginning with:

  • “I’ve been feeling ___ but I’m not sure why.”
  • “There’s this one thing I keep thinking about…”
  • “I don’t really know what to say” This is totally normal!

Or even: “I’m not sure why I’m here, but I know I need something to change because the mess is overwhelming me.

And that’s more than enough.
